<p>The 111th FS is the group's flying unit and has employed the F-16A ADF since December 1989, with a C-26A and a UC-26C in support. The squadron was organized in June 1923 and called to active duty in November 1940. The unit was given federal recognition in February 1947 as the 111th Fighter Squadron, operating the P-51D at Ellington Field. The squadron was mobilized again in October 1950 and converted to the F-84E before reverting to state control in July 1952 with the F-51H. The unit was redesignated the 111th Fighter-Bomber Squadron in January 1953 until early 1955, when it reverted to being a Fighter-Interceptor Squadron with the arrival of F-80Cs. F-86Ds were delivered in August 1957 with the ANG jet instrumentation school operating the T-33A. The 147th FIG was activated in May 1958, before the F-86L was assigned the following year. The F-102A was delivered in the summer of 1960 and the Delta Dagger was operated until 1975, despite the first F-101Bs having arrived for the 111th FIS in May 1971. The unit won the F-101B catagory at the 1978 and 1980 William Tell competitions. The squadron was responsible for training air defense aircrew for the ANG from January 1970 until April 1976, hence the assignment of both types. F-4Cs were operated from 1981 until they were replaced by the F-4D in January 1987.
